EVALUATION.

My overall media product was filmed in a narrative setting. The video follows a storyline of which is created through the lyrics of the song. It is a convention of "real media products." There are three different types of music videos;
NARRATIVE PIECE; this is when a video tells a story that is incorporated into the lyrics.
PERFORMANCE PIECE; this is where the artist, couple or band are perfoming there lyrics and instruments.
ARTISTIC PIECE; this is where the video uses transitions, blends and forms of special effects in order to create a video that is seen to be extremely abstract and may contain really random elements that cause the audience to really wonder about the piece. Artistic pieces often contain deeper meanings hidden within the words and storyline.
Our music video is placed in the narrative piece category, as our video tells a story that is followed by lyrics. We have also used forms of special effects such as transitions within our video, which also makes it slightly an artistic piece, however, the meanings are not hidden, but straightforward and easy to define.

My website and album cover both fit together well, and both fit in with the artist. The metallic writing on my cover shows that Switchy B is a strong minded individual, and due to the shine effect I added, it really shows that Switchy B is of the grime genre. The music video represents that you can be as confident as you like, but in the end, when you lose someone you love, then it's nobodies fault but yours. This projects a slightly different side to grime. A side that shows sensitivity and compassion. The music video shows the guy heartbroken and in deep remorse about what he has done, which reinforces to grime fans that with every sin there is a price. I feel this is a great message to send to younger adults out there, as most people don't realise the impact of their actions until they have lost something.

I have used a wide range of programs to create my media video.The main products I used consisted of a Sony DV Camcorder, and then using the AppleMac computers to use a form of software called Final Cut Pro which edits out certain pieces of film that you don't want and also allows you to create effects and transitions to make your video more abstract if you needed it to be. Using the video camera was a simple task, simply consisting of the push of a button. The camera was easier to film with when accompanied with a tripod, the tripod steadies the camera to aviod "camera shake." It also conveys a moodset of "tranquility" which causes an impact on the audience when something suddenly happens. Final Cut Pro was quite complicated to get the hang of, but once we did, it became really easy to use. We completed our video using this programme.

We tried to shoot each scene more than once so that we could have more choice when it came to selecting the final scenes. This way allowed us to shoot the scenes in different angles so that afterwards we could swap angles and also so that we could decide which angle was the better angle to use for that particular scene.

I was able to gain feedback through posting my blog address onto my facebook wall, aswell as the three comments I recieved in feedback [one of which helped me create a better website] I often got positive comments from other group members, and was happy to feed back to them.

During the creation and filming of our music video we did encounter a few problems. For example, we experienced many issues within our group due to exams being on, work etc, so trying to work around everyone limited us to filming just once a week, and usually at night when people had finished work. This pushed our filming dates back alot as we had to do it weekly. Occasionally it was difficult to book the camera, as many other groups would be filming around the same time. However, we easily sorted this problem and planned days we were all available for filming and then decided on days and all kept to them. This solved the problem and allowed us to get all the correct material for filming that we needed. A second problem that we encountered was that when we put the video together with the song, we found that some scenes were too short or long to match in with the lyrics, which resulted overall in us needed an extra 30 - 40 seconds of filming! Luckily, our camerman filmed myself and the other main character actually naturally with each other, and most of this footage was able to be corporated into the music video really well. The final problem was unfortunately within the group, despite myself and Josh planning dates for shooting, organising the right people to be in the right place, organisation of transport, etc, one member of our group was quite unco-operative with us, which was unfortunate as it meant that we couldn't work properly within the group if an individual wouldn't actually work with us. Overall, the finished product turned out to really work alongside the lyrics, and tells the story well. I am really pleased with our group for managing to work against problems to still create a narrative music video of a good standard.

EDITING MUSIC VIDEO; use of applemacs.

The programme we used whilst editing our video was "Final Cut Pro" on the Apple Mac systems. On plugging in the video camera with all our footage on, this screen is displayed.

To upload the footage, you press the "play" button on the video camera and then press the "capture" button. The "escape" key should be pressed when the amount of desired video footage has been captured.

The footage will then appear upon the left side of the monitor listed as "untitled" in order for you to name this file as appropriate. When double clicked, the footage appears in a small window next to it, which is shown in the screen shot above. To select individual parts of the footage you wish to use, then you use the marker icons that are at the bottom of the window that are seen to be slightly to the left to flag out a star and then finish the point of footage. The star should then be dragged onto a timeline at the bottom. There are also video transitions that are able to be selected on the left hand side of the screen. This is achieved by clicking on the effects tab and then selecting transitions.

This is the timeline. This is where the selected footage should be. You drag and drop your selected footage into the correct plac ein order to form your film. With some certain videos, you need to drag and drop onto the exact right place, in order for words to match actions, or for lip syncing to look good. In our video none of the actors/actresses were filming miming, thisn was because we thought that it would be difficult as miming needs to be done completely right in order to not look stupid.

ANCILLARY TASKS; feedback from others.

In order to see that my ancillary tasks were up to scratch I posted my work on Facebook in the hope of gaining a mutual form of feedback, and also in the hope of someone giving me pointers and tips that I could possibly work on to make my work better. Following feedback included;

Jess Rose.
i love the colours you've used to create the website. they really relate to the theme of the site. perhaps the pictures could have a border or something round them though? just helpful advice :)xxxxx
--------------------------------
I took Jess' advice on board and created a border for my pictures, I'm glad I got given this advice as it allows the pictures to look more professional and also allows them to stand out even more as the border highlights them.

Jordan Cody.
i perfer the website to the digipack thing. it does look a bit too much, but you've explained that that was the look you were going for, so it achieves that really well. the website is sweet, and like something you'd probably see online.

Colin Brown.
i like it. perhaps you could animate the pictures to create a slideshow or something too? would that help?
--------------------------------
I considered doing a slideshow, but decided that with the animated title, it would look as though too much was going on, so I had decided to keep it as just photographs of Switchy.

ANCILLARY TASKS; completed digipack.

My compeleted digipak sends a strong message of grime, though the digipack appears a little "busy" I feel that this is a good thing as something stereotypically associated with the theme of grime is "graffiti" which seems busy so I like the effect of this digipack resembling aspects of graffitti. Most of the images shown on the digipack are of Switchy B. The other images are taken by myself for the purposes of the case. The two individuals holding each other is taken of their shadows, this is because I wanted to get a better effect of the image. It shows the closeness of couples in love, and the darkness hides the secrets that love often hides. I felt that it would be a good connotation as Switchys song tells us about a guy cheating on a girl, and her leaving him for another man. I also used pictures of Switchy B inside to simply promote the artist himself. The effects of the blue neon aim to show the electrifying pain experienced when love is broken, which I feel gives yet another good theme in the category of "grime".I used the same background as I did on the website so that fans of Switchy can feel a sense of collaboration and assocate that kind of colour etc, with Switchy and with the theme of grime.

ANCILLARY TASKS; digipack ideas.

By using this template of a digipack, I am enabling myself to create an actual digipack by using this simple draft. My digipack will again aim to promote Switchy B and therefore must again follow the theme of grime. I aim to keep the scheme similar to that of the website, so will be using darker colours in order to directly contrast with the white titles seen on the digipack. This creates a good effect on allowing the titles to really stand out to the target audience, and will possibly be able to attract more audience if it is seen to be particulary effective. I produced a draft plan and aim to keep to my draft when creating my original.

ANCILLARY TASKS; evaluation of final website.

Overall I feel that my website really achieved what I set out to achieve, I really perfer this website to the other one. It maintains a distinctly more mature approach to the artist and really shows that it's apart of the "grime" genre, by the creation of my animated title, which was created in Animation Shop, which seems to really promote the grime style. The "bling"ness of the title allows the audience to immeadiately identify the genre of the website. I created new rollovers using effects from Paint Shop Pro called "Sunburst," which I used as one of the rollovers when the audience actually clicks the link. I also completed all pages in the website. They were a little rushed because the home page took me a while to create and be completely happy with so the other pages aren't as good. That's the main thing I'd change, if I had more time I could properly have designed the other pages which were "News, Events & Switchy B." Otherwise I am really happy with my overall website design. :)
