PRILIMINARY WORK; history of the music video essay.

The History of the Music Video.

Music videos are now renowned as a very crucial part of the music industry today. Modern day artists owe their careers to music videos as they have the chance of impressing the public not just based upon their vocal talent, but also with their looks or moves, in the case of “Lady Gaga” they also seem to be able to inject a sense of direct personality into the video, to promote themselves further.

Thirty years ago, the music video used to be less important then it is nowadays. MTV (Music Television) was the phenomenon that gave importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA and it marked the beginning of the music video’s ruling over the music industry. As MTV was broadcasting 24-hour-a-day music, music videos needed to be produced to allow the public to view them. MTV, however, has been highly controversial: some saw as the beginning of an amazing, new, fresh era in music, others considered it to mark the end of true musical talent, as artists have become more appreciated for their looks instead of their vocal abilities.
Nowadays, I think that the music video is roundabout as important as the song itself; sometimes it even decides the success of a song or artist. Collections of music videos are being sold on tapes or DVDs. They consider that a music video should be assessed based on its visual qualities and not on the song quality – for example, artists have realised the great potential of using female sex-appeal in music videos, therefore this feature is being used excessively as it is more popular for the public to watch the “pretty ladies!!”

The first ever short film produced was by Warner Brothers in the year 1926, however, "Bohemian Rhapsody" - a video that had been video filmed and recorded around 50 years later, was and is still today, considered to be the "first" music video that was made. The main reason for this thought is that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is was the first video that wasn't recorded onto a film reel. Instead, the song and video were both recorded onto a video cassette. The video has also been said to be the foundations for other music videos that have been created and released since then by the usage of three elements. The three main elements consist of a filmed singer, couple or band performing, transitions, special effects and image blends present within the film, and finally certain film techniques to create the right effect. It has also birthed to us many music shows such as "Top of the Pops" whcih has been able to really show us throughout the years how the music culture has developed, grown and changed to suit the taste in music of today.

Music videos have been created to complement a released single by an artist. This gives the audience a visual interpretation of the lyrics, and also shows the audience the hidden meanings within the lyrics. It also gives the artist a chance to really promote themselves. Female artists such as Rihanna and Beyonce show themselves scantily clad to gain male appreaciation. Music videos also allow artists to show off other talents, for example, Lady Gaga dances alot in her videos and it really highlights the fact that she knows how to dance, and promotes herself aswell as her music. This also allows the song to be remembered more by the audience, if they enjoyed the video, therefore increasing their thoughts upon that particular artist.
