EVALUATION.

My overall media product was filmed in a narrative setting. The video follows a storyline of which is created through the lyrics of the song. It is a convention of "real media products." There are three different types of music videos;
NARRATIVE PIECE; this is when a video tells a story that is incorporated into the lyrics.
PERFORMANCE PIECE; this is where the artist, couple or band are perfoming there lyrics and instruments.
ARTISTIC PIECE; this is where the video uses transitions, blends and forms of special effects in order to create a video that is seen to be extremely abstract and may contain really random elements that cause the audience to really wonder about the piece. Artistic pieces often contain deeper meanings hidden within the words and storyline.
Our music video is placed in the narrative piece category, as our video tells a story that is followed by lyrics. We have also used forms of special effects such as transitions within our video, which also makes it slightly an artistic piece, however, the meanings are not hidden, but straightforward and easy to define.

My website and album cover both fit together well, and both fit in with the artist. The metallic writing on my cover shows that Switchy B is a strong minded individual, and due to the shine effect I added, it really shows that Switchy B is of the grime genre. The music video represents that you can be as confident as you like, but in the end, when you lose someone you love, then it's nobodies fault but yours. This projects a slightly different side to grime. A side that shows sensitivity and compassion. The music video shows the guy heartbroken and in deep remorse about what he has done, which reinforces to grime fans that with every sin there is a price. I feel this is a great message to send to younger adults out there, as most people don't realise the impact of their actions until they have lost something.

I have used a wide range of programs to create my media video. The main products I used consisted of a Sony DV Camcorder, and then using the AppleMac computers to use a form of software called Final Cut Pro which edits out certain pieces of film that you don't want and also allows you to create effects and transitions to make your video more abstract if you needed it to be. Using the video camera was a simple task, simply consisting of the push of a button. The camera was easier to film with when accompanied with a tripod, the tripod steadies the camera to aviod "camera shake." It also conveys a moodset of "tranquility" which causes an impact on the audience when something suddenly happens. Final Cut Pro was quite complicated to get the hang of, but once we did, it became really easy to use. We completed our video using this programme.

We tried to shoot each scene more than once so that we could have more choice when it came to selecting the final scenes. This way allowed us to shoot the scenes in different angles so that afterwards we could swap angles and also so that we could decide which angle was the better angle to use for that particular scene.

I was able to gain feedback through posting my blog address onto my facebook wall, aswell as the three comments I recieved in feedback [one of which helped me create a better website] I often got positive comments from other group members, and was happy to feed back to them.

During the creation and filming of our music video we did encounter a few problems. For example, we experienced many issues within our group due to exams being on, work etc, so trying to work around everyone limited us to filming just once a week, and usually at night when people had finished work. This pushed our filming dates back alot as we had to do it weekly. Occasionally it was difficult to book the camera, as many other groups would be filming around the same time. However, we easily sorted this problem and planned days we were all available for filming and then decided on days and all kept to them. This solved the problem and allowed us to get all the correct material for filming that we needed. A second problem that we encountered was that when we put the video together with the song, we found that some scenes were too short or long to match in with the lyrics, which resulted overall in us needed an extra 30 - 40 seconds of filming! Luckily, our camerman filmed myself and the other main character actually naturally with each other, and most of this footage was able to be corporated into the music video really well. The final problem was unfortunately within the group, despite myself and Josh planning dates for shooting, organising the right people to be in the right place, organisation of transport, etc, one member of our group was quite unco-operative with us, which was unfortunate as it meant that we couldn't work properly within the group if an individual wouldn't actually work with us. Overall, the finished product turned out to really work alongside the lyrics, and tells the story well. I am really pleased with our group for managing to work against problems to still create a narrative music video of a good standard.

EDITING MUSIC VIDEO; use of applemacs.

The programme we used whilst editing our video was "Final Cut Pro" on the Apple Mac systems. On plugging in the video camera with all our footage on, this screen is displayed.

To upload the footage, you press the "play" button on the video camera and then press the "capture" button. The "escape" key should be pressed when the amount of desired video footage has been captured.

The footage will then appear upon the left side of the monitor listed as "untitled" in order for you to name this file as appropriate. When double clicked, the footage appears in a small window next to it, which is shown in the screen shot above. To select individual parts of the footage you wish to use, then you use the marker icons that are at the bottom of the window that are seen to be slightly to the left to flag out a star and then finish the point of footage. The star should then be dragged onto a timeline at the bottom. There are also video transitions that are able to be selected on the left hand side of the screen. This is achieved by clicking on the effects tab and then selecting transitions.

This is the timeline. This is where the selected footage should be. You drag and drop your selected footage into the correct plac ein order to form your film. With some certain videos, you need to drag and drop onto the exact right place, in order for words to match actions, or for lip syncing to look good. In our video none of the actors/actresses were filming miming, thisn was because we thought that it would be difficult as miming needs to be done completely right in order to not look stupid.

ANCILLARY TASKS; feedback from others.

In order to see that my ancillary tasks were up to scratch I posted my work on Facebook in the hope of gaining a mutual form of feedback, and also in the hope of someone giving me pointers and tips that I could possibly work on to make my work better. Following feedback included;
--------------------------------
Jess Rose.
i love the colours you've used to create the website. they really relate to the theme of the site. perhaps the pictures could have a border or something round them though? just helpful advice :)xxxxx
--------------------------------
I took Jess' advice on board and created a border for my pictures, I'm glad I got given this advice as it allows the pictures to look more professional and also allows them to stand out even more as the border highlights them.
--------------------------------
Jordan Cody.
i perfer the website to the digipack thing. it does look a bit too much, but you've explained that that was the look you were going for, so it achieves that really well. the website is sweet, and like something you'd probably see online.
--------------------------------
--------------------------------
Colin Brown.
i like it. perhaps you could animate the pictures to create a slideshow or something too? would that help?
--------------------------------
I considered doing a slideshow, but decided that with the animated title, it would look as though too much was going on, so I had decided to keep it as just photographs of Switchy.

ANCILLARY TASKS; completed digipack.

My compeleted digipak sends a strong message of grime, though the digipack appears a little "busy" I feel that this is a good thing as something stereotypically associated with the theme of grime is "graffiti" which seems busy so I like the effect of this digipack resembling aspects of graffitti. Most of the images shown on the digipack are of Switchy B. The other images are taken by myself for the purposes of the case. The two individuals holding each other is taken of their shadows, this is because I wanted to get a better effect of the image. It shows the closeness of couples in love, and the darkness hides the secrets that love often hides. I felt that it would be a good connotation as Switchys song tells us about a guy cheating on a girl, and her leaving him for another man. I also used pictures of Switchy B inside to simply promote the artist himself. The effects of the blue neon aim to show the electrifying pain experienced when love is broken, which I feel gives yet another good theme in the category of "grime".I used the same background as I did on the website so that fans of Switchy can feel a sense of collaboration and assocate that kind of colour etc, with Switchy and with the theme of grime.

ANCILLARY TASKS; digipack ideas.

By using this template of a digipack, I am enabling myself to create an actual digipack by using this simple draft. My digipack will again aim to promote Switchy B and therefore must again follow the theme of grime. I aim to keep the scheme similar to that of the website, so will be using darker colours in order to directly contrast with the white titles seen on the digipack. This creates a good effect on allowing the titles to really stand out to the target audience, and will possibly be able to attract more audience if it is seen to be particulary effective. I produced a draft plan and aim to keep to my draft when creating my original.

ANCILLARY TASKS; evaluation of final website.

Overall I feel that my website really achieved what I set out to achieve, I really perfer this website to the other one. It maintains a distinctly more mature approach to the artist and really shows that it's apart of the "grime" genre, by the creation of my animated title, which was created in Animation Shop, which seems to really promote the grime style. The "bling"ness of the title allows the audience to immeadiately identify the genre of the website. I created new rollovers using effects from Paint Shop Pro called "Sunburst," which I used as one of the rollovers when the audience actually clicks the link. I also completed all pages in the website. They were a little rushed because the home page took me a while to create and be completely happy with so the other pages aren't as good. That's the main thing I'd change, if I had more time I could properly have designed the other pages which were "News, Events & Switchy B." Otherwise I am really happy with my overall website design. :)

ANCILLARY TASKS; final website.

This was my final website plan. I decided on abandoning the frame ideas, because I felt that they made the website seems slightly feminine. I therefore changed the frames to have only two sections, and also a banner above for the title. I used brushes in Paint Shop Pro to create my background, and really like the grungey effect that it gives the rest of the website. I decided to only use the background on the banner of the website as I didn't want to make it look over complicated, which I think I allowed to happen in my draft. The background seemed to drown out everything else about the website. I also perfer the font type uses on this website. It gives the impression of a retro/street theme which is the exact look I planned on attempting to create. I decided to create a collage and use photographs seeing as I didn't do that on my first draft. It's important for fans to be able to view their artist so as they can allow the artist to inspire themselves and also in order to idolise the artist, therefore capturing the target audience. I feel this website is alot more capable of doing that. This is the finished product.
This new version of the website seems to promote SwitchyB alot more.I feel it is alot more co-ordinated than the previous website, and I am really happy with my overall result. I particulary like the title "SwitchyB" I used Bolts SF as the font as I thought it was particulary appropriate as it gives the words a sense of electricity, which is something Switchy tries to promote within aspects of his music.

ANCILLARY TASKS; website analysation.

The overall website of which I have created has successfully achieved the aims I originally set out to achieve. The colour scheme works really well for my selected genre of music. I feel that dark colours work alot better than more colourful ones would have done. The dark colours such as black, grey and silver promote a sense of "street" into the website which again supports the overall theme of grime. However, despite this, I have decided to attempt another one to fully get a better "grime" feel, as I feel that my website look slightly childish, espcially because I used Animation Shop to create a "sparkle" effect upon the title. The new website will be colour shemed differently, using dark colours such as greys, blues and browns as they are colours that really capture the "grime" genre. By creating a more mature version of the website I will be able to capture the target audience of which I am looking for.

ANCILLARY TASKS; creating image rollovers.

To allow users of my website to access links, I have created an image rollover effect for each of the links on my navigation bar. I feel that the rollovers blend really well with my overall genre. My original rollover idea was to simply change the colour from "black" to "red," then I decided to create a third rollover using a spiked effect to finally gain a more "street" look to my website. Image rollovers are quite straight forward to create - Insert --> Web Object --> Rollover.

This takes you onto the below main screen, which you simply link the image to the other to enforce the rollover.

ANCILLARY TASKS; website title creation.

After I had completed my frames draft, I decided on an appropriate font style to use as my webpage title. I decided on keeping to my set colour scheme, as it focuses on complementary colours, which relates well to the genre of my website. I planned on pixelating my title in Paint Shop Pro, so as the title could really stand out from the background of the orginal page.

I was able to gain this effect by going to Selections --> Modify --> Expand, then by expanding the floating section of my title, I was able to copy and paste the newly added outline onto a new layer to repeat the process. I did this until I was happy with my result.

I also decided on creating an animation on my title, which I did by converting the original file from a .psp file to a .jpg. When animating the title in Animation Shop, I had to finally convert the file to a .gif as to not lose any of the images overall quality.

ANCILLARY TASKS; website border and background designs.

By using my first draft, I was able to create this through using paint. I decided on making the lines separating the frames thicker as I felt it kept more with the grime theme, I also gave each corner a different colour, just to add to decorative effect. I think the grey and black theme works well, and it definitly ties in with the overall theme of grime.
The corner was simple and very easy to contruct. I used different shades near the ends of the frames to create a shadowed effect, making the overall graphic look more realistic and allow it to be of a higher quality. I dotted different shades around the corner to again, create a more realistic effect. After I had completed the corners I expanded the frames to allow them to have a white pixelation round each frame. This way the frames stand out more, as they would be harder to pick out if I had simply kept the grey/black background. This was one of the problems I first encountered, but it was quite minor, and I was able to sort it out easily but adding the white border. The background goes well with the theme of my website, as it looks "scruffy" and therefore ties in really well with my genre. The background was difficult to create, I began using this image;

After deciding that the image appeared to be too light in contrast to my overall website, I decided to make a change to it, and therefore opened up the image in Paint Shop Pro, and simply colourized it to blend in with a darker contrast. The background now blends really well with the colour scheme for the iframes and I'm pleased with how well that worked. I went into Colours --> Negetive Image to gain this effect.

After the background had been changed I was able to incorporate it into my frames; giving my website outline this overall draft;

ANCILLARY TASKS; website draft ideas.

Above is my website frames draft. I got the idea of this website from viewing several websites promoting different grime artists. I did this so a could get a quick feel of how most of the websites look, so that when I finally created mine, it would look extremely realistic and have a real feel for the grime theme. Chipmunks website uses a frames layout, and I feel it is an effect and easy to navigate website. I wanted to achieve this same effect, so after viewing the website I created a quick draft simply using Paint. I have decided to move things about a bit, and have also included a navigation bar, so that the website is easier to use and users can easily find whatever they are looking for.

I also sketched a my styled frame draft;

PRILIMINARY WORK; video analysation.

LADY GAGA. PAPARAZZI.

Performance Video/Narrative.
Gaga’s video tells two stories within her narrative.

1) The struggle for a relationship based on love not fame.
2) Hardships of living with your life in the media.

Through the struggle, Gaga shows her strength in the video by using elements of storyline combined with strong female sex appeal. She shows this in various complex dance routines. Within the narrative, she is shown recovering from her fall in a wheelchair, proving her determination to be well again. The use of dance promotes a positive image of Gaga, showing that she is a talented and capable individual, who strives to promote appealing songs mixed with an abstract quality.

Gaga promotes herself through the male glare. She using her body to capture the attention of most males everywhere. Gaga also has a scene involving several other females, to promote that "she doesn't need a man." However, she incorporates the males idealistic view of “two women.”

The narrative constantly shows how Gaga changes, from firstly being in love, in which the video shows a close up of her lips, outlined with a dark red lipstick – signifying love, lust and passion. The end of the video shows a close up of Gaga with black lipstick on, signifying her want for revenge as she poisons her boyfriend. She promotes herself as a strong female.

PRILIMINARY WORK; call sheet.

PRILIMINARY WORK; camera angles.

ESTABLISHING SHOT.
When a shot capture the whole setting, and the audience are shown where they are. Sets the scene and is often shot as a type of long shot to fit scenery etc into the shot.

MID SHOT.
Usually a shot of an individual from the waist/knee up.
CLOSE UP.
A shot where the camera is close, and able to see intricate details, such as tears on faces.

EXTREME CLOSE UP.
Often used to really get the audiences attention focused. ECU's also really emphasise the shown object.

PRILIMINARY WORK; my written storyboard.

Blended shots of the boy and girl enjoying their time together in the form of a slow motion pillow fight, they wrestle into the bed, and the shot ends with them kissing.
Boy sat alone on the bed in deep thought, his eyes turn to a photo of the two which is on his bedside,
He swipes at the photograph with his hand, it smashes and the camera fades out on the shattered photograph.
Shots of a different girl opening her door to the boy and him going inside, through the window you can see their silhouette holding each other.
Shots of the boy and girl speaking to each other.

Boy tries to hug the girl but she pushes his embrace away.
Girl shouting at boy.
Girl throwing his phone at the wall.
Girl looking into the mirror.
Doing makeup before going out.
Girl seen in town with the girls.
Guy asks her for a drink.
She sits with him and the bar.
Shot of him ringing her whilst she is at a friends, she notices it’s him calling and looks at the phone, her finger hesitates over the end call button.
Shots of them happy together on his bed again, with the photo frame intact again.
Shots of the girl speaking to someone, her expressions seem angry.
Shots of her talking to the boy, she walks away and he watches her leave.
Studio shots of the girl singing OR
Shots of the girl walking alone down the street.
Shots of her with another man, holding hands down the street.
Shots of him with girls talking to him, but him ignoring them and checking his inbox reading “0.”
Shot of the girl and new guy holding hands blends into those two holding hands.
Shots of him in the car with a friend as she walks past with her new man, hand in hand, smiling, laughing.
Girl happy and smiling to fade out.
Leaving Him.

PRILIMINARY WORK; permission from artist.

PRILIMINARY WORK; storyboard.

The idea of having a storyboard allowed us to plan the scenes for filming for our music video alot more easier than if we didn't have the storyboard to hand.

PRILIMINARY WORK; how i found my artist.

I first came across the name Switchy B when my friend mentioned that he worked with him at Sports Direct. He spoke of a confident, friendly individual who seemed to love music and love performing. After my friend told me of this artist, we decided to base our media project around him, and after I conducted further reasearch on Switchy and his love for "Grime Music."
Switchy gave us a CD with his latest work on, and after listening to the CD we decided he would be great to use in our media video. Switchy B can be found on;
www.myspace.com/switchyb

PRILIMINARY WORK; lyrics of our video to "leaving you".

Verse 1 (male)

When we got together, it was all blessed,
We could jam for weeks and there’d be no stress,
I would tell you there’s nothing wrong but somehow this still turned into a mess,
I would tell myself I’m only texting girls that’s why there’s nothing wrong,
And I would only check these girls when me and you was going on something long,
But I look back now and that weren’t right,
Me and you weren’t love at first sight, but,
But real talk any time I see you girl trust me girl I was loving your sight,
I should have just got rid of them texts,
Why’d I let you look at my phone?
Why’d I send them texts in the first place?
Why’d I lie to your face in the first place?
Chorus (female)
How can I be with someone who can’t tell the truth and that I,
I can’t rely on?
I can’t believe that,
That you,
That you could treat me so bad,
That’s why I’m leaving you.
Verse 2 (male)
When we broke up girl I was messed up,
If it was any other girl I would have fixed up,
And you know that,
There was something about you girl I didn’t want to lose that,
So I rang you every day to hear your voice again every day,
And the fact that you didn’t want to go away was the main reason that I didn’t go away,
I could see that glimmer of hope,
I could see them rays of the sunshine,
I could see that getting back with you, that would only be a matter of time,
But then something switched up quick,
Someone just snaked on Switch,
When I asked you if you want to come back,
I couldn’t figure out your reply.

Chorus (female)

How can I be with someone who can’t tell the truth and that I,
I can’t rely on?
I can’t believe that,
That you,
That you could treat me so bad,
That’s why I’m leaving you.

Verse 3 (male)

So you moved on,
You got a next man,
And I got bare female fans,
But every day I still think about me and you just hand-in-hand,
I’ve learnt from my mistakes I would never treat a girl how I treated you,
But you know that I miss you girl,
And I know that you miss me too,
But when I’m seeing you out with your man I had no idea what I was thinking,
And I didn’t have nothing to lose,
And it ain’t like we was just linking,
But the truth is,
Yeah I still care about you still think about you,
When I seeing that smile on your face,
I had to hear what you had to say.

Verse 4 (female)

I think about you and you know I care about you but you know you really hurt me and you know I can’t forgive that,
I loved our time together boy you know I mean that,
But what you did was wrong and that’s why I got to tell you that.

Chorus (female)
How can I be with someone who can’t tell the truth and that I,
I can’t rely on?
I can’t believe that,
That you,
That you could treat me so bad,
That’s why I’m leaving you.

PRILIMINARY WORK; history of the music video essay.

The History of the Music Video.

Music videos are now renowned as a very crucial part of the music industry today. Modern day artists owe their careers to music videos as they have the chance of impressing the public not just based upon their vocal talent, but also with their looks or moves, in the case of “Lady Gaga” they also seem to be able to inject a sense of direct personality into the video, to promote themselves further.

Thirty years ago, the music video used to be less important then it is nowadays. MTV (Music Television) was the phenomenon that gave importance to the music video. MTV started broadcasting in 1981 in the USA and it marked the beginning of the music video’s ruling over the music industry. As MTV was broadcasting 24-hour-a-day music, music videos needed to be produced to allow the public to view them. MTV, however, has been highly controversial: some saw as the beginning of an amazing, new, fresh era in music, others considered it to mark the end of true musical talent, as artists have become more appreciated for their looks instead of their vocal abilities.
Nowadays, I think that the music video is roundabout as important as the song itself; sometimes it even decides the success of a song or artist. Collections of music videos are being sold on tapes or DVDs. They consider that a music video should be assessed based on its visual qualities and not on the song quality – for example, artists have realised the great potential of using female sex-appeal in music videos, therefore this feature is being used excessively as it is more popular for the public to watch the “pretty ladies!!”

The first ever short film produced was by Warner Brothers in the year 1926, however, "Bohemian Rhapsody" - a video that had been video filmed and recorded around 50 years later, was and is still today, considered to be the "first" music video that was made. The main reason for this thought is that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is was the first video that wasn't recorded onto a film reel. Instead, the song and video were both recorded onto a video cassette. The video has also been said to be the foundations for other music videos that have been created and released since then by the usage of three elements. The three main elements consist of a filmed singer, couple or band performing, transitions, special effects and image blends present within the film, and finally certain film techniques to create the right effect. It has also birthed to us many music shows such as "Top of the Pops" whcih has been able to really show us throughout the years how the music culture has developed, grown and changed to suit the taste in music of today.

Music videos have been created to complement a released single by an artist. This gives the audience a visual interpretation of the lyrics, and also shows the audience the hidden meanings within the lyrics. It also gives the artist a chance to really promote themselves. Female artists such as Rihanna and Beyonce show themselves scantily clad to gain male appreaciation. Music videos also allow artists to show off other talents, for example, Lady Gaga dances alot in her videos and it really highlights the fact that she knows how to dance, and promotes herself aswell as her music. This also allows the song to be remembered more by the audience, if they enjoyed the video, therefore increasing their thoughts upon that particular artist.

RESEARCH & PLANNING; research into our chosen artist.

Switchy B's promising music career initally began on a council estate in Milton Keynes. Bedroom sets and writing sessions with friends provided him with his first chance on the microphone, "Milton Keynes is my hometown and the Grime scene is huge there" says Switchy B. Alongside other local acts, Switchy created a sound that remains hip/hop and grime but has appeal across musical genres.

RESEARCH & PLANNING; researching target audience.

Definition -->
A specified audience or demographic group for which an advertising message is designed.

My chosen target audience that suits the grime genre is mainly aimed towards teenagers and younger adults, surrounding an age band of 15 - 25. This is because grime represents the modern ideas of youth, it uses things such as sex, drugs, alcohol in many of the songs known in this genre. My target audience involves white and black people, the grime genre is probably more stereotypical towards black people, as grime is classed as street music. The latest grime artists could also possibly appear in the target audience, usually of a similar age to promote youth and music.

RESEARCH & PLANNING; the colour wheel.

I took some time to research into colours that “worked” well together, as I feel that it is an important quality for a website to have, in order to keep the visitors attracted and amused. It is important to realise that websites need to have the correct blends of bright and dull colours, as a constant mix of bright colours can be a slight eyesore and cause the target audience to seek a different website elsewhere. I feel that layout changes to your website monthly can aid the purpose of capturing an audience and therefore allowing them to constant check out changes to the site. Due to the genre the website is about [grime] it's clear that duller colours will take a more positive effect on the audience.

Primary Colours -->

Red, yellow and blue
In traditional color theory, these are the 3 pigment colors that can not be mixed or formed by any combination of other colors. All other colors are derived from these 3 hues

Secondary Colours -->
Green, orange and purple.
These are the colors formed by mixing the primary colors.

Tertiary Colours -->
Yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green and yellow-green.
These are the colors formed by mixing a primary and a secondary color. That's why the hue is a two word name, such as blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange.

Analogous Colours --> are the colours of which lie on either side of the chosen colour. The example above shows this. They often are able to relate to colour schemes found in nature. Analogous Colours are often described as “tranquil” and “harmonious.” This colour scheme will not be very useful in my website, as grime isn't often seen as tranquil, it is much more upbeat and outrageous.

Complementary Colours --> are the colours of which are located directly opposite one another on the colour wheel. They often can contrast really well with one another, allowing things to really stand out, and be noticeable. It gives good examples of font colours to use against certain backgrounds.

Split complementary colours --> is basically when you select a colour, then its analogous colour with it’s complementary colour. This form of colour scheme is able to give your website a much higher degree of contrast!
Triad colours --> are three hues that are equidistant on the colour wheel, making your website colourful and balanced.
